BY THE FIRST FRENCH TRANSLATOR OF QUIXOTE - Lot 76
BY THE FIRST FRENCH TRANSLATOR OF QUIXOTE ROSSET (François) and DOUET (Louis). Paris, Vefve Pierre Bertaud, 1612. One volume in-4 (4 ff, 120 pp, ff 61-94, 76, 12 ff), numerous pagination errors but collation similar to BNF copy and Palau, 279032. Contemporary soft vellum, title in pen on spine. Skylight in title and p. 41. Pale rings in margins of first few leaves. Extremely rare first edition. Losada Goya, 500: Despite its character, this pièce-ballet is rooted in the reality of the time, as it is a description of the festivities that took place in the Place Royale on the occasion of the publication of France's matrimonial alliances with Spain (on the enthusiasm with which this work was received, cf. G. Hainsworth "Las Novelas exemplares"). It's a sort of holiday book, with obvious nods to Don Quixote, with the Chevaliers du Soleil and the Amadis... Rosset was the first French translator of Le Quichotte, in 1614. Brunet IV, 1402. Salva didn't have it
