ROJAS (Fernando de)]. CELESTINA, tragicomedia di Calisto et - Lot 70
ROJAS (Fernando de)]. CELESTINA, tragicomedia di Calisto et Melibea, tradotta de lingua castigliana in italiano idioma. Nuovamente ampliata & corretta.
Vinegia, Francesco di Alessandro Bindoni & Mapheo Pasini, compagni, 1531.
One volume in-12, 120 ff, full cherry red morocco, ornate ribbed spine, gilt edges (20th-century binding signed R. Gozzi Modena). Spine slightly oiled, but a very good copy.
Extremely rare edition, unknown to Fouché-Delbosc and Palau (51192), who both cite a 1531 edition printed by Melchior Sessa in 112 ff.
Brunet I, 1723, cites a Venetian edition of 1531, with no further details. Is it ours? Likewise for Salva, 1160.
La Celestina, published in 1499, is the Spanish book which, after Don Quijote, was the most universally distributed and celebrated. The plot of this comedy, in 22 acts in the latest editions, is extremely simple: Calixte, spurned by Mélibée, appeals to the Celestina, an old matchmaker who knows how to bend rebellious wills in love. She emerges from the murky world of prostitutes and ruffians in which she evolves. She foreshadows the picturesque yet trivial realism that would triumph in the picaresque novel. That's why Cervantes defines this book as "divine if its human content had been left a little more in the shadows." (Laffont-Bompiani, I, p. 346).
