LA GALATEE PRINTED BY DIDOT L'AINE - Lot 67
LA GALATEE PRINTED BY DIDOT L'AINE CERVANTES/FLORIAN. GALATEE, Roman pastoral imitated from Cervantes by M. de Florian, capitaine de dragons. Paris, Imprimerie de Didot l'ainé, 1783. One small volume in-12, full red morocco, finely decorated smooth spine, triple gilt fillet on covers, guilloché edges, gilt edges (period binding). A fine copy. Ex-libris René Choppin. Galatée was finally published in 1783. Much was read of this simple tale, which overcame some of the dullness and reminiscences of Honoré d'Urfé with more vivid coloring and genuinely touching scenes. First edition printed by Didot and illustrated with seven engravings by B. Gayand. Palau, 51955.
