A NEW TRANSLATION WORTHY OF PRAISE - Lot 43

A NEW TRANSLATION WORTHY OF PRAISE CERVANTES SAAVEDRA (Miguel de). L'INGENIEUX HIDALGO DON QUICHOTTE DE LA MANCHE translated and annotated by Louis Viardot. Paris, J. J. Dubochet et Cie, 1836-1837. Two volumes in two volumes in-8, eggplant glazed half-calf, ornate smooth spines (period binding) bound in pamphlet, untrimmed. Some wear spots. Portr. Front. 744pp. // gr. Front. 758 pp. First printing of Tony Johannot's vignettes, with the first-print criteria noted by Vicaire (II, 156): the figure on page 256 of Volume I looks to the right; on the first frontispiece, Don Quixote is shown seated, sporting a moustache. Louis Viardot's new translation is excellent. Carteret, III, 136: "One of the most beautiful illustrated books of the 19th century". This edition was a huge success.
