HAUSSMANN, Georges Eugène,baron(1809-1891). L.A.S. addressed - Lot 137
HAUSSMANN, Georges Eugène,baron(1809-1891). L.A.S. addressed to M. Garfounkel. Péra, May 12, 1873. 6 pp. in-8. Very interesting letter on Haussmann's mission in Turkey. Haussmann is in Turkey to set up the Compagnie de Finance et de travaux Publics de l'empire Ottoman and obtain "the concession of the railroad network of Asiatic Turkey (more than 3,000 kilometers), the construction of which was the reason for this financial operation". He recounts the difficulties of his position: "Since the last change of Grand Vizier, my situation has greatly improved. The previous Grand Vizier personified a mindset hostile to French influence, and favorable to German efforts to gain a foothold here. Finally, he had a pet peeve, which made him systematically hostile to my proposals: the execution of public works by troops [ ]". A fascinating account of his progress.
