LESSEPS - PANAMA CANAL. Set of 13 documents:
-LESSEPS, Hélène Autard de Bragard (1848-1909), wife of Ferdinand de Lesseps. L.A.S. to Mme de Joncières. La Chesnaye, December 26, 1892. 4 pp. in-8. The indictment of Ferdinand de Lesseps in the Panama scandal. "Without the painful and odious events we are going through, I would already have thanked you [...]. I am alone. Think of my poor, aged and weakened Mr de Lesseps, whom I am protecting against an awful and revolting ingratitude. He who had given his life to his country, which had loved and glorified him! At last, after the ordeal, I hope God will send us our reward. My strength comes from my faith! I'm overwhelmed with letters and dispatches, all very touching! [...]. I've been living a life of slavery for a long time now [...]". The Panam Canal affair was the biggest financial corruption scandal of the 3rd Republic: hundreds of thousands of subscribers went bankrupt as a result of collusion between power and finance. The affair was hushed up until 1891, when it exploded. Lesseps, his son and Eiffel were condemned.

Lesseps asks him "if there was anything new about the doctor recommended by the Shah of Persia [...] that I could announce to Cte Walescki"; he mentions a letter from Lisbon, etc.
