Old handwritten annotations on title "[Bailly], estimable man, learned astronomer, guillotined during the Revolution" and opposite, on the flyleaf, "Bailly was elected Mayor of Paris in 1789 and put to death in 1793 by the furious people who had appointed him and who did not forgive him for his love of good order and moderation.
