PHILLIPS (Tom); McHUGH (Heather). Where Are They Now? (The C - Lot 191
PHILLIPS (Tom); McHUGH (Heather). Where Are They Now? (The Class of Forty-Seven). New-York, R. Minsky; London, The Talfourd Press, 1990. In-4 oblong, publisher's full bradel brown leather binding, smooth spine, gilt authors and title, cold-stamped title and subtitle on upper board, framed by a small original etching by the artist.
Rare artist's book composed by Tom Phillips (1937-2022), with the participation of American poet Heather McHugh. Tom Phillips composed 31 images, copies of which he sent to Heather McHugh, who wrote poems about them. Phillips then took these poems and transformed them by painting some of the words. His new text sometimes reaffirms, sometimes contradicts the poet's interpretation of the images. Each page of handmade paper contains the image, enlarged and revised both by hand and computer, and hand-painted in watercolor from the artist's prototype.
Limited edition of 57 copies on handmade paper by Richard de Bas, signed by the artist and the poetess: one of the 10 first copies (no. III), leather-bound and including 3 additional leaves enriched with Tom Phillips' autograph annotations to the colorist.
