[Sixteenth-century book]. PERSE, JUVENAL; CHACON (Pedro). Re - Lot 145
[Sixteenth-century book]. PERSE, JUVENAL; CHACON (Pedro). Reunion of two works in an in-8 volume, contemporary ivory vellum with covers, smooth spine, title in ink, fillet bordering the boards (binding formerly rebound, sporadic light spotting). - 1 PERSE. Satyrarum liber I.; JUVENAL. Satyrarum lib. V.; SULPICIAE Satyra I. Cum veteribus commentariis nunc primum editis. Ex bibliotheca P. Pithoei Lutetiae, apud M. Patissonium, 1585. [6] f. (last blank), 302 p., [5] f. (index). (USTC 170793). - 2 CHACON (Pedro). De triclinio, sive, De modo convivandi apud priscos Romanos, & De conviviorum apparatu. Accedit Fulvi Ursini Appendix Hedeilbergae, s.n., 1590. [2] f., 192 p., [6] f. (index). Important treatise on gastronomy and meals in antiquity (Vicaire, 174). An exceptional copy, distinguished by its provenance. It first belonged to the Dutch philologist Petrus Scriverius (1576-1660); then, from 1663, to an unidentified scholar (Henrici Houmer?); it then passed into the library of the Dutch orientalist Thomas Theodor Crusius (1648-1728), and from 1730, into the possession of Pieter Burmann (1668-1741). Burmann and Scriverius extensively annotated this copy. The binding must have been reassembled or established after Scriverius passed through his hands, as suggested by the handwritten note on the spine "cum mss P. Scriverii".
