[Engraving]. [Turkey, Hungary, Austria]. PEETERS (Jacob). Sa - Lot 144
[Engraving]. [Turkey, Hungary, Austria]. PEETERS (Jacob). Sacr. caes. ma[iesta]ti Leopoldo has Turcis ereptas, et favente Deo eripiendas Hongariae Civitates, aliasque Turcias D. D. C. Q. [Antwerp, Peeters, c. 1685]. In-8 oblong, modest old fawn half-basane (spine and boards worn, corners rounded, worm bites crossing the volume but limited to the foot margins without severity; foxing only to the text leaves).
Rare and important work paying tribute to Leopold of Habsburg (1640-1705), King of Hungary and Bohemia, Archduke of Austria (1657), and finally Emperor-elect of the Holy Roman Empire. It comprises a large number of engraved plates showing his battles, conquests and the places over which he reigned. The names of engravers Gaspar Bouttats (b. 1635) and Lucas Vorsteman (1595-1675) appear on many of the plates, while others are unsigned; some are probably by Jacob Peeters (1637-1695), the Antwerp-based engraver and print publisher who designed the work.
This copy consists of an engraved title, 11 equestrian portraits and 10 views of battles; then come 20 pages of 2-column text, in French, bearing the title: "Briefve description et démonstration des places et villes continuées en ce livre; exactement delinées comme elles sont à présent"; finally, 110 engravings on 104 plates offering views of towns and castles in Austria, Hungary, Turkey and the islands of the eastern Mediterranean.
Total: one engraved title, 20 pages of text and 125 plates with 131 figures. It seems that not all copies contain the same number of engravings, and that one edition with the text in French and another with the text in Flemish stand out. In any case, this is probably the most complete copy to have come up for sale in recent years.
