[WINE, TRADE]. LABAT, François de, Chevalier de Vivens (1687-1780)
Important and first memoir on the wine trade. 7pp in-8, (s.l.n.d); The cultivation of land, the trade that sustains it, the navigation that gives life and movement to assets, today excite general attention. Never has emulation been so lively and produced so many writings on this subject. However, nothing has yet been published on the wine trade. Yet it is France's trade, the best it can do, and the one whose loss is imminent. Daignera ton me permis quelques réflexions sur un sujet si intéressant et si peu connu [ ] .
Autograph memoir on the wine trade. 3 pp in-8, (s.l.n.d) ; Wine is an essential commodity for countries that have no other resource than wine to subsist and pay their bills [ ] .
Suite des mémoires autographe sur la descente des vins, où l'on rapporte en abrégé l'origine et le progrès des abus. 4pp in-8, (s.l.n.d). Autograph erasures and annotations: "To take things from their origin, we will first observe that the wines of Guyenne were sold in the city of Bordeaux wholesale and retail, according to common law. The inhabitants of Bordeaux were satisfied with a duty on wines exchanged in their port or sold in their city, which seemed fair, especially as the duty was modest [ ] .
Extrait précis des mémoires pour la descente des vins ; mémoire pour les habitants du grand pays de Guyenne. (s.l.n.d) 11 pp in-8. Memoire divided into three distinct parts (Abus et inconvénients des privilèges, Abus touchant la jauge, histoire du privilège de la ville de Bordeaux); The affair of the descent of wines should not be considered as a lawsuit between upper and lower Guyenne. It is a matter for the general police force, which is too enlightened today and too negligent to waste time better spent on abolishing abuses, by arguing about their vain titles [ ] . The main trade in the high country consists of wine, which is not very expensive, but by this very fact, and because it is resistant to the sea, is very suitable for cargoes and considerable armaments. They are sent to the French islands of America, Holland, Flanders, the north and the northern provinces of the kingdom [ ] . In a word, all cargo costs are the same, whether the tonnage or measure is large or small. It follows that top wines whose barrels are one-fifth smaller pay one-fifth more of the duties and costs common to all [ ] . The city of Bordeaux has found itself in very favorable circumstances to obtain graces and usurp rights. Little subject to the French and English, who possessed it in turn, both sought to win its affection through benefits and privileges. Philip the Fair was the first to grant it such privileges, after reuniting Guyenne due to a lack of homage, but in the charter he gave to the inhabitants of Bordeau as under the name of the Philippines, there is no mention of wine [ ] .
Set of five autographed documents concerning wine law, the descent of wines, the manner of wine and a memoir on frozen vines in the Beaupuy vineyard in 1766. 26 pp, various formats, (s.l.n.d). Attached is an autograph letter addressed to Chevalier de Vivens. 4 pp in-8. Stockholm, August 7, 1764; It is certain, Monsieur le chevalier, that it is very acceptable to be only seven or eight hundred leagues away from each other, one can talk almost at one's window. I have become your neighbor, and you will see that I am even a better neighbor than the people who live at your door [ ] .
