Second edition in French of this important work by Jean Hugues Linschoten (1563-1611), bringing together all knowledge of the East and West Indies at the end of the 16th century. First published in Dutch in 1596 from Spanish and Portuguese documents on navigation and geography, it was used to build vast English and Dutch empires overseas. Attached to the service of Vicente Fonseca, Archbishop of Goa, Linschoten sailed with him to the Indies. During various missions, he gathered a wealth of information on the islands and coasts of the Indian Ocean. This account, annotated by Bernard Paludanus, abounds in details on the geography, customs, production, flora and fauna of the countries visited. It is illustrated with intaglio engravings and maps.
Pl. 1, 8, 36 are missing; the copy contains 2 of 5 maps in poor condition, one of which does not correspond to those described in the table.
Provenance: handwritten bookplate of a canon dated 1694.
