HAGER (Joseph). In-folio, XXXVIII p., [1] f., 175 p., pl., figs, contemporary blue marbled boards (worn spine rebacked, joins split, hinges lined, corners dull; moderate scattered russeting). First edition dedicated to Eugène-Napoléon of France, viceroy of Italy. An Italian philologist, J. Hager (1757-1818) studied Chinese in Leipzig, worked for a time at the Bibliothèque nationale in Paris, then taught oriental languages at the University of Pavia. The illustration consists of an engraved fold-out plate showing the entrance to a Chinese temple in Canton; pages 165 to 175 are illustrated with woodcut Chinese characters. Printed on wove paper; a copy with full margins. (Cordier, B. sinica, 597)
