GUIGNES (Chrétien-Louis-Joseph de). [Dictionnaire chinois-français et latin Paris, Imprimerie impériale, 1813] [Corrected proofs]. Fort in-folio, modest period green half suede (binding worn, freckles and soiling, mq. in margin p.379; snag p. 777, page 961 rubbed and incomplete). Exceptional collection of proofs of this famous dictionary, annotated and corrected in the author's own hand. The entire text has not been preserved, but this precious volume bears witness to the care De Guigne took to perfect his work. The corrections are numerous and meticulous, aimed at typographers. Each set of proofs bears a delivery date in ink; the author has also initialed or signed at the end of each set. An early handwritten note on the flyleaf sheds light on the document's provenance: this copy belonged to Mr. Roland de Bussy, then to Mr. Oppetit (?). They were both attached to the Imprimerie Royale, and there is no doubt that the proofs corrected by Mr. De Guignes remained in their hands after the printing of the famous dictionary.
