CIBOT (Pierre-Martial). Letter from Peking on the genius of the Chinese language and the nature of their symbolic writing, compared with that of the ancient Egyptians... Attached is an extract from two new works by M. de Guignes,... relating to the same subjects. A Bruxelles, chez J. L. de Boubers, 1773. In-4, XXXVIII-46 p. (miscalculated for 49), [3] f. (transl. of English words), [1] blank f., pl., contemporary fawn calf, 5-nerved spine, matching title-piece, ornate caissons, gilt roulette at the edges, red edges (defects including split upper jaw, spine gilt). The only uncommon early edition of this work, falsely attributed to Jean Amyot, edited by J. T. Needham for the Royal Society of London. It is illustrated with 29 engraved plates (nos. 1-2 and XX-XLVI), showing mainly ideograms, but also some Chinese objects. (Cordier, Sinica, col. 1735-1736). Old engraved monogrammed bookplate.
