ANVILLE (Jean-Baptiste d'). Nouvel atlas de la Chine, de la - Lot 40
ANVILLE (Jean-Baptiste d'). Nouvel atlas de la Chine, de la Tartarie chinoise et du Tibet... A La Haye, chez H. Scheurleer, 1737. Large folio, [1] f. (title), 10 p., 42 maps, contemporary glazed marbled fawn calf, 7-rib spine, burgundy title-piece, small gilt decorated caissons, triple cold fillet framing the boards, gilt roulette on the edges, red edges (slight rubbing on the boards and edges, small tears on the lower board, discreet restoration in the margin of one map, slight brown spots).
A fine copy of the first atlas of China published by a French cartographer, and the second devoted to this geographical area after that given by Blaeu around 1655, which offered 18 maps.
It comprises 42 copper-engraved maps. Most of the maps are adorned with decorative title cartouches illustrating various Chinese places and scenes. The map of China, Chinese Tartary and Tibet features a beautiful title cartouche depicting the Emperor of China. This atlas also contains an important map of the countries crossed by Captain Bering from the city of Tobolsk to Kamchatka, and a map of the Kingdom of Korea, as well as detailed maps of Chinese provinces such as Quang-Si, Quang-Tong, Se-Tchuen, Chen-Si.
