SEGALEN Victor (1878-1919) L.A.S. to Yvon... - Lot 2 - Gros & Delettrez
SEGALEN Victor (1878-1919) L.A.S. to Yvon Segalen, (s.l.) May 21 [1915]. 4 pp. in-8. Mounted on paper (in the margins). Victor Segalen learns "[ ] by telephone that Italy was going to war. Then a ship's ensign took a stovepipe as a megaphone & turned as far as he could towards the Germans, and started shouting at them: "Bunch of Krauts! Come out of your holes! You're finished! Italy is marching with us. Viva el Italia! [ ] The Krauts immediately responded with rifle fire. [If we had wanted to attack that evening, there was only one word to say: all the sailors would have jumped for joy at the Germans. [ ] ". He goes on to offer advice and remarks to his son [On my behalf, tell whoever provokes you that boxing like this is still a game for ruffians. [I'll introduce you to real boxing, which will enable you [ ] to throw your opponent around so that he never comes back. [ ] ". Unpublished letters, family provenance.
