WELTMANN (i.e. VEL'TMAN, Aleksandr Fomich). Historical memor - Lot 243
WELTMANN (i.e. VEL'TMAN, Aleksandr Fomich). Historical memories of the Moscow Kremlin. Moscow, printed by N. Stepanoff, 1843. Large in-8, [1] f., IV p., p. [3]-75, pl., havana Russian half-leather with corners, spine with 4 nerves, title, gilt fillets and fleurons, double gilt fillet on covers, gilt roulette on corners (lower covers detached, upper jaw split, corners and headbands worn; freckles on q. pl.).
Very rare French edition, translated by Baron Léon de Bode. There is only one copy in French public collections (CCFr), in the library of the Centre d'Etudes Slaves in Paris. The work is presented as a guide for visitors to the Kremlin's cathedrals and the Tsar's living quarters; it also mentions 22 buildings in the Kremlin that have disappeared.
The illustration comprises 12 figures, one of which is in 4 sheets, making a total of 15 plates. The first (plan of the Kremlin) is missing from this copy, which instead contains 29 plates not indicated in the table, probably added, in lithography, showing objets d'art captioned in French and Russian, including a chromolithographic plate showing the golden crown, known as the Monomaque bonnet.
