[Drawing]. LONGUEMAR (Alphonse Le Touzé de). Album of drawings: "Pots-pourris, réminiscences et charges". Circa 1850. 69 illustrations in various techniques (pen, washes and watercolors in different formats, etc.) and on different media. Most of the works are glued, titled, dated and located. Oblong album (10 x 15.5 cm). Gold titled inscription on front cover: "Album". Photograph of the author pasted on the back cover. Some leaves are detached from the binding. Entitled "Pots-pourris, réminiscences et charges", this notebook by Alphonse Le Touzé de Longuemar was probably produced in the 1850s. More than twenty years after his participation in the Algiers campaign, its author recalls this period and fixes on paper the portraits of numerous soldiers. Full of both mischief and tenderness, Le Touzé de Longuemar depicts a vast gallery of soldiers. They are portrayed dozing off during what must have been a long and exhausting crossing aboard the ship Algérsiras in 1830. Each drawing is annotated with a note providing further information about the man depicted, including rank and character. The composite nature of the work is clear from the title page. In this notebook, Le Touzé de Longuemar also drew caricatures of various types of Poitevins he came across, as well as archaeological sites, including the famous Poitiers standing stone. In particular, he produced a series of curious caricatures he entitled "caprices de la gelée sur des carreaux de fenêtres" ("whims of frost on window panes"). Using the effects of condensation, the artist imagines various compositions.
