HUGO Victor (1802-1885). French writer. - Lot 71
HUGO Victor (1802-1885). French writer.
L.A. to Noël Parfait. Hauteville House, November 8 (1859), 2 pp. 1/2 in-8. Address via London and Ostend to Brussels with stamp and postmarks.
Victor Hugo's pleasure at recognizing Noël Parfait's handwriting on a strip of mail was diminished by the discovery that it rolled up "[ ] Catholic gibberish entitled le Journal de Bruxelles. Don't send me any more of that stuff [ ]" he prays. "For thirty years, I haven't read a word [ ] written against me. Not one Planche, not one Veuillot, not one Caro, not one Barbet, has had the joy of knowing that they had me for a reader [ ]". The poet has far too many things to do, and life is too short. He reserves his leisure for his friends "[ ] As for my enemies, I have nothing for them, I don't even have to give them the time of day to smile in disdain [ ]".
He goes on to give some news, evoking La Légende des Siècles: "Four thousand copies sold in a month in Paris, the edition already sold out, that's good. I think this book will have something of the fortune of N.D. de Paris. [ ]. He concludes with a confidence: "Alix tells me that the honorable Proudhon [ ] this quasi-approbate of December 2nd, is unleashed against La Légende des Siècles. That goes without saying. This good man is the Chrysale of pot-bellied socialism. He adores Boileau and he's right.
Collection of Monsieur M and current owner by inheritance.
