GEOFFROY SAINT-HILAIRE, Étienne (1772-1844). Set of 2 docume - Lot 288
GEOFFROY SAINT-HILAIRE, Étienne (1772-1844). Set of 2 documents: -P.A.S. August 24 and 25, 1813. Document set in a strong paper frame, paper restoration and creasing. Certificate in part printed and completed by Étienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire "Professor of zoology, both at the Ecole Normale, and at the Museum of Natural History" certifies that Achille Pascal Rey has assiduously followed the course of zoology (mammals) during the year 1813. Document also signed by Vauquelin. - GEOFFROY SAINT-HILAIRE, Étienne]. Manuscript probably copied by his son, Isidore Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire (1805-1861), then aged 19. Paris, December 12, 1825. 1 p. 1/2 in-folio. Important text devoted to the composition of the "bony head" of man and of "mammals in the fetal state", notably of reptiles and fish. This research was presented by Étienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire to the Académie des Sciences in 1925. He demonstrates that the skull is made up of seven vertebrae and draws up a synoptic table of the cranial bones, which also gives a concordance between his nomenclature and that of Cuvier. A L.A.S. and a P.A.S. from Eloi Johanneau, addressed to Etienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire, are enclosed. 1 p. in-8 and 1 p. in-12 oblong. Address on the back of the second sheet. Johanneau sends an epitaph (5 verses) dedicated to the sailor, who died at sea during the repatriation of the obelisk of Luxor, after having saved the life of Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire and two other men. It also evokes a memoir by Marcel de Serres "on the animals described and sculpted by the ancients".
