RUBINSTEIN, Anton (1887-1982). Set of 3 documents: - Lot 252
RUBINSTEIN, Anton (1887-1982). Set of 3 documents: -L.A.S. addressed to the librettist Jules Barbier (1825-1901). Peterhof, 8/20 June 1875. 3 pp. in-8. Embossed AR figure at the head. Fancy spelling. Beautiful working letter dedicated to his opera: Nero, for which Barbier was writing the libretto. "[...] Your second act is very beautiful, but it lacks lyrical moments, i.e. moments where the dramatic march stops to give place to the expression of the intimate feelings which dominate the characters at given moments [...]. Thus at the very beginning of the act, in the scene of Poppea with Balbillas after he has said "you will reign" it is absolutely necessary for Poppea to have an explosion of joy and triumph, a kind of graceful, coquettish, brilliant Cavatina, to characterize the character [...]. But I beg you to send me the other two acts as soon as possible [...]". He can only work correctly if he knows his characters "I am therefore waiting with feverish impatience for the other two acts, to sketch the whole [...] everything can still be remedied and above all perfected [...]". The opera was a great success. -P.A.S. Dresden, s.d. Beautiful and large signature of Anton Rubinstein on an in-8 sheet. Header of the Hotel du Helder, Paris. -Portrait of the American-Polish pianist by Bruckmann from a work by E. Felix. Black and white print, cabinet size 13 x 9.6 cm (17 x 11 cm with cardboard). "Bruckmann's portrait-collection". Handwritten dates, names and biographical elements of Rubinstein.
