ZOLA, Émile (1840-1902). Autograph manuscript. S.l.n.d. 4 pp - Lot 224
ZOLA, Émile (1840-1902). Autograph manuscript. S.l.n.d. 4 pp. in-8 and a few lines on one side. Exciting autograph corrections to a manuscript by Ilia Halpérin-Kaminsky (1858-1936), a Russian writer and translator, containing an account of literary debates and discussions between Flaubert, Zola and Tourguenev. Zola recounts after Halperin-Kaminsky how Flaubert spurned Merimee: "He [Turgenev] understood even less when Flaubert denied Mérimée in front of him, Mérimée whom the writer held as a true master [...]. Come on! Said Flaubert one day - bring the next time a book of Mérimée, I do not have any at home, and we will discuss his style. The book brought, Flaubert began to read, stopped at each line, to criticize everything, the syntax, the images, the unfortunate turns of phrase, the "who, the "that", especially the ready-made sentences, the commonplaces flatly written [...] ". Ilia Halpérin-Kaminsky reports the discussions of the three authors and their point of view on Daudet, Goncourt, Chateaubriand, and more generally on their conception of literature and style. Zola corrects: "As for Chateaubriand [...] he [Tourguenev] could not penetrate the cult of Flaubert who recited certain sentences of the "Mémoires d'Outre Tombe", with the devout passion of a priest officiating at the altar of his god. I was with Flaubert, with all my literary faith, only I repeat, I would not always give wrong to Tourgueneff ".
