ABBÉ PRÉVOST, Antoine François Prévost d'Exiles, dit (1697-1 - Lot 197
ABBÉ PRÉVOST, Antoine François Prévost d'Exiles, dit (1697-1763), French clergyman, journalist and translator. He wrote, among others, the Histoire du chevalier des Grieux and Manon Lescaut. L.A.S. addressed to Reverend Father Dom Guillaume Le Sueur. [Paris] Hôtel de Conti, October 8, 1738. Address on the verso of the second leaf with red wax stamp preserved. Document mounted on a mitre and bound in black half-maroquin with corners in the Bradel style, long title in gold. Handwritten bookplate of Claude Seignolle on the back cover. The Abbé Prévost, in dire straits, is looking for a permanent position in the house of Rohan and talks about his novel Cleveland: " [...] I have already opened up on this matter to Mr. Prince de Conti, to make sure I have his consent. He grants it to me with the best grace in the world. Besides the honor of employing me for the House of Rohan, to consider what an advantage it would be for my peace of mind and my reputation to be able to get out of this labyrinth of trifles in which the state of my fortune keeps me confined despite myself. The studies with which I have occupied myself all my life should not lead me to make Cleveland! [The English Philosopher or History of Mr. Cleveland, natural son of Cromwell, a novel by Abbé Prévost, had 7 volumes and met with little success] ". He asks his correspondent to pay his respects to the abbé de Vantadour and to the Cardinal de Rohan "if I dare to flatter myself that my name was not unknown to him, and that he will remember that I had the honor of being presented to him in the Louvre by Mr. Roüillé [...]". The letters of Abbé Prévost are rare. Published in: L'abbé Prévost - Histoire de sa vie et de ses œuvres, by Henry Harrisse, Lévy, 1896, pp. 283 and 284.
