DRIEU LA ROCHELLE, Pierre (1893-1945). L.A.S. addressed to A - Lot 163
DRIEU LA ROCHELLE, Pierre (1893-1945). L.A.S. addressed to André Chaumeix. Porquerolles, January 9, 1923. 2 pp. 1/2 large in-4. Beautiful letter dedicated to Mesures de la France and to the death of his friend Raymond Lefebvre (1991-1920), writer and pacifist, socialist and then communist activist, who disappeared in the White Sea in the autumn of 1920 at the age of twenty-nine, on his way back from a trip to Soviet Russia where he had attended the IInd Congress of the Communist International. Drieu thanked the critic of Le Gaulois for his article devoted to Mesures de la France, a prophetic essay in which, as a soldier of 1914, he pointed out the weaknesses of his country and encouraged it to ally itself with its neighbors: "[...] I do not fail to note either that you put all your resources of flexibility at the service of my thought, to make it admit as easily as possible the way of presenting itself, which is sometimes not very civil. Finally, you give me a large credit, and you do not insist on the weaknesses of this small work, reckless in places ". He adds "I read the Humanité of Sunday, and I see the quarrel that Martinet makes. I am writing to him to specify my attitude on the death of Lefebvre. I do not believe at all as you do that he was murdered by the Soviets, nor do I agree with Martinet's strong opinion. I mark in my letter in the most precise way that I am not writing to him because you have lent me a clear-cut opinion on the death of my friend, but that I am doing so only out of respect for the truth and to keep to the prudent attitude that I should adopt in a literary article [...]".
