ROUGET DE LISLE, Claude-Joseph (1760-1836), author of La Mar - Lot 136
ROUGET DE LISLE, Claude-Joseph (1760-1836), author of La Marseillaise. L.A.S. addressed to M. Coytier. S.l.n.d. 2 pp. in-8. About the debts of Rouget de Lisle. He reassures his creditor "about the next return of your funds. Our business is decidedly finished up there, and the next decade will not pass surely without their coming back to you". He then advises Coytier to speak about his embarrassments to Mr. Armey "to whom I have not concealed that I was indebted to you and how eager I was to pay you [...] I am going to follow up on my affair from now on and not leave it until it is absolutely finished. It would be cruel to fail in port. Try to face this gust of wind. It will not be up to me if it is not the last one [...] ". Attached: a L.A.S. from Dauphin, concerning Rouget de Lisle's debts (10 000 francs with interest). The latter is unable to pay them back. Dauphin quotes him at length: "Retired in Montaigu, seeing no one, I can hardly subsist, my own property remains undivided with my brothers [...]". Cesancey, July 5, 1815. 2 pp. in-4.
