LOUIS XIII (1601-1643). P.S. (handwritten), addressed to M. - Lot 102
LOUIS XIII (1601-1643). P.S. (handwritten), addressed to M. de Malissy, captain "of a company in the regiment" in the citadel of Pignerol. Château-Thierry, "Chastautiery," May 27, 1635. 1 p. large folio. Address on the reverse. Minor scratches. Very interesting document in which Louis XIII gives the reasons that "forced him to war against the King of Spain" a few days earlier. Indeed, on May 19, 1635, Louis XIII and Richelieu had declared war on Spain, thus bringing France into the Thirty Years War. Louis XIII also reports a battle won against Spain under the command of Prince Thomas. "The Spanish army commanded by Prince Thomas, composed of ten to twelve thousand men on foot, [...] one thousand horses and sixteen cannons, were all the oldest and best troops in the Low Countries [...] mine, in order to prevent their passage, was attacked [...] after a battle lasting more than four hours, it was completely defeated. More than five thousand remained dead in the square [...]".
