Henri MATISSE (Le Cateau-Cambrésis 1869-1954) Painter and sc - Lot 41
Henri MATISSE (Le Cateau-Cambrésis 1869-1954) Painter and sculptor. Autograph letter signed and addressed from Saint-Gaudens on July 12, 1940, to Raymond Escholier, journalist, novelist, art critic and curator, then a refugee in Mirepoix, where he was mayor for a year. Matisse describes his situation at this eventful time: "I escaped from St-Jean de Luz where I thought I would be safe... I had been sent from Nice, when the Italians declared war, a Greek torso of fine quality... I am stuck in St-Gaudens, waiting for the resumption of ferocious communications (sic) to return to Nice. He asks Raymond Escholier if he could not keep this sculpture for him "while waiting for true peace, in safety somewhere around here, where we are far from the Italians". He informs his interlocutor that he has declined the proposal of the Director of Fine Arts to put in safety, with the works of the Louvre, two boxes of his paintings, having already taken his precautions. He evokes this period as "a catastrophe which embraces us all". 2 pages in-4 with stamped envelope.
