SNOUCK HURGRONJE Christiaan. - Lot 158
SNOUCK HURGRONJE Christiaan. Bilder Atlas zu Mekka. Haag, 1888, in-folio in titled cardboard folder, without lace or spine. Album of 38 plates out of 40 (missing 7 and 13) including 4 final chromolithographed plates representing ceremonial objects. Small marginal loss to plate 36, and 10 plates have marginal foxing. Index of printed plates. Atlas only. The Dutch orientalist Snouck spent a year in Mecca and Jeddah in 1884-1885. He was the first non-Muslim to visit the city outside of the annual pilgrimage, endowed with an impressive academic background in orientalism and a stated ambition to convert to Islam, the combination of which seems to have given him unprecedented access to Mecca. The photographs, taken by himself and an Arab physician, are among the first to show Mecca and its pilgrims.
