Raoul DUFY (1877-1953) - Lot 58
Raoul DUFY (1877-1953) The port of Ulysses Watercolor on paper. Signed and titled lower left. 47,5 x 60 cm Bibliography : Raoul Dufy, Catalogue Raisonné des aquarelles, gouaches et pastels, by Fanny Guillon-Laffaille, Tome II, Editions Louis Carré et Cie, Paris, 1982, illustrated under n° 1150 p. 34. In 1922, Dufy made a trip to Italy. Sicily particularly inspired him because of the intensity of the Mediterranean sun and the power it gives to colors. He produced sumptuous watercolors that he associated by their titles with the story of Odysseus in the Odyssey. Raoul Dufy said that watercolor offered him "greater possibilities in terms of improvisation" because, thanks to its very rapid use "the transition between colors is already made by the white of the paper. To suggest the waves, Dufy uses dotted or comma-shaped strokes, the brush thus playing with sinuosities and volutes. In Fanny Guillon-Lafaille's catalog, several watercolors taking up this theme and this virtuoso technique are listed. Beyond his traditional subjects (landscapes, interior scenes, orchestras), Dufy knows how to take a totally modern approach where the gesture summarizes the forms in signs and symbols.
