Adolphe JOURDAN (1825-1889) - Lot 18
Adolphe JOURDAN (1825-1889) Bather at the spring Oil on canvas. Signed and dated 1866 lower left. Important classical stuccoed and gilded wood frame. 175 x 115 cm 215 x 150 cm with frame. A student of Jalabert, Adolphe Jourdan was part of the great tradition of painters who studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and who perpetuated, especially during the Second Empire, the excellence of the Ingresque craft in terms of drawing and coloring. He exhibited some forty paintings at the Paris Salon between 1855 and 1880, receiving medals in 1864 and 1866. Jourdan was particularly appreciated in the United States where he exhibited in many galleries. More unexpectedly, he became friends with Paul Gauguin and Vincent Van Gogh declared his admiration for Jourdan in letters to his brother Theo. Exhibition: perhaps Salon de Paris 1870 under the title "La Source".
