Johann Ludwig Rudolf DURHEIM (1811-1895) - Lot 15
Johann Ludwig Rudolf DURHEIM (1811-1895) An icon painter's workshop, Jerusalem Oil on canvas. Monogrammed in the lower center, Inscribed on the back of the frame "interior of a Greek painter painted by Durheim". 28,5 x 36 cm Framed in stuccoed wood from the 19th century. The Museum of Fine Arts in Bern holds 120 paintings, watercolors and drawings from the artist's studio collection which testify to his work during his travels in the Orient from 1848 (Egypt, Palestine, Syria). We also know of him "Religious ceremony in the church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem" (Drouot 27/11/2003). DURHEIM also collaborated as an assistant in the realization of the album of Auguste Salzmann, an Alsatian photographer who published in 1856: Jerusalem: study and photographic reproduction of the monuments of the Holy City, a work of great rarity and the first photographic testimony on its archaeological monuments. In the first edition there are two engravings with the mention "DURHEIM delineavenit". In the Greek Orthodox community of Jerusalem, there were painting workshops that produced painted canvases for the curiosity and devotion of tourists who brought them back to Europe. Our painting, of a subtle workmanship, describes a workshop, whose activity is intimately mixed with the family life within the private home with its beautiful Ottoman style architecture. We thank Ariane de Saint Marcq, expert in icons, for the information she kindly provided.
