Cherry picking, Europe, late 19th century... - Lot 93 - Gros & Delettrez
Cherry picking, Europe, late 19th century
Folded fan, the double skin sheet painted with gouache of young people picking cherries. The central couple is borrowed from François Boucher's (1703-1770) "The Basket of Cherries" (1768). Signed on the left " A. Doveaux (?)".
Reverse side painted with scrolls on the border and trophies of the countryside and warriors.
Very fine white mother-of-pearl mount cut, carved, engraved, burgundy and gilded. Under the aegis of Renommée sounding her trumpet, the warrior Paris kidnaps the beautiful Helen to leave Troyes. In the side panels, lovers hold a basket of flowers, a crown of laurels and a shield. The sculpted plumes of a soldier in armour surmounted by a love.
Partial re-engraving, on the reverse, of the motif on the face.
