Dimensions : 56 x 34 x 16,5cm. 18,5 x 26,5 x 16,5cm. Bibliography : "In France, the year 1924 (...) of the Croisière noire, which forged the glory of the manufacturer André Citroën. The Croisière Noire set off on 28 October 1924 from Colomb-Béchar in Algeria, on the edge of the Sahara, and travelled 20,000 kilometres until it arrived in Tananarive, Madagascar, on 26 June 1925, after 235 days, not without having traced a new route through Central Africa. In private life, Mr. and Mrs. Citroën were loyal customers of Louis Vuitton. In 1923, a large order for a series of luggage items ranging from an aeroplane trunk to a lunch case revealed the couple's plans to take part in the Croisière Noire after the frustration of the aborted inaugural voyage on the Trans-Saharan line. At the same time, that same year, at the express request of André Citroën, Vuitton began designing and preparing trunks and cases of all kinds for the raid, which, by their exceptional nature, were special orders. (...) Gaston Louis-Vuitton raised and worried about several crucial points: "Cars III and VIII do not have individual medicine cabinets. Should they be provided in the same place as the other cars? Or "The AV BVI CVIIII cars are indicated with two toilet bags each: is this not a mistake?". Another request was made: "Cars I and II belonging to Mr Haardt and Mr Audouin-Dubreuil are to be fitted with toilet bags containing: three large bottles, four small ones. What capacity? Should these bottles be made of crystal or metal - aluminium, melchior or silver? This is followed by questions about keys. In particular for the chests containing medicines and poisons. On September 10, 1924, Georges-Marie Haardt sent the Maison Vuitton a complete list of the items to be included in his toilet suitcase. A host of stoppered bottles with stilligouttes containing hair and eye lotions, eau de Cologne, etc.; a toothbrush, a shaving bowl, clothes brushes, hair brushes, nail brushes, manicure accessories, a small pharmacy including tubes of quinine tablets, aspirin, etc., and splinter forceps. And imagine the painstaking care that this leader had to take in drawing up lists of everything that would be taken on board the eight vehicles, and the ingenuity that Vuitton had to develop so that this severely exhaustive inventory could be accommodated in the 150 or so trunks delivered to Citroën. The trunks were covered with a different colored canvas, each vehicle having been assigned a specific color: red, yellow, and containing cots, work tables, folding seats, spare clothes, toiletries, various accessories, tools, dishes, medicines, drinking water, etc., but also boxes for boots, trunks for washing machines, boxes containing rifle and revolver cartridges, etc." "Louis Vuitton -100 Trunks of Legend" published by Editions de la Martinière.
