Maurice MAETERLINCK. - Lot 188
Maurice MAETERLINCK. The Bluebird. Enchantment. Decorations and Costumes for the Blue Bird. Paris, Le Livre, 1925-1927, 2 volumes in-8 bound under double blue and silver interlocking, with small slit without gravity. The book is illustrated with 14 watercolours by Georges Lepape, including a frontispiece and a vignette on the cover, stenciled by Jean Saudé, with gold and silver highlights. The album contains 61 watercolours, also stenciled by Jean Saudé, with gold and silver highlights, on a full page, of which the 7 plates of the decorations are double. The album "L'Oiseau bleu" was printed in 460 copies, all numbered, and the album "Décors et Costumes" in 230 copies. Our copy, numbered on wove wove paper (n°253 and 200), includes two original watercolours by Georges Lepape on the two false titles with dedication by the artist, in pencil, dated March 1947, representing respectively, the Blue Bird flying over Notre-Dame de Paris and the Arc-de-Triomphe, and a boy looking at the Blue Bird perched on a panel. The works were offered to British Brigadier William Fraser "the Honourable" at the end of his UNRRA (United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration) Mission in France with a dedication, and accompanied by a letter signed by Philippe Ortiz, dean of the Mission (March 1947, 1p. in-4).
