Edgar QUINET (Bourg-en-Bresse 1803-1875). French historian, - Lot 36
Edgar QUINET (Bourg-en-Bresse 1803-1875). French historian, poet, philosopher and politician. "The New Genesis". Complete manuscript of the first 29 chapters of his work "The Creation" which appeared in January 1870, at the International Bookshop, during the difficult years of exile. The Creation is one of Edgar Quinet's major works. The manuscript represents the first 3 Books of his work (of 9, 7 and 7 chapters respectively), followed by the first 6 chapters of Book Four. Book One is entitled "The New Spirit in the Natural Sciences", Book Two "The Question of Our Century. Origin of Organized Beings" and Book Three and Book Four "The New Genesis". The manuscript consists of 212 folio-sized leaves, written in black ink, with legible handwriting. The first leaf has been cut in two and bears a trace of restorative glue, some leaves are written on the back, the leaves placed between 57 and 64 are noted a to i; after leaf 47 there is an in-8 leaf, also numbered 47, corresponding to a footnote to be inserted at the bottom of the page. Although intended for the printer, in its almost definitive form, it contains erasures, cross-outs, and passages entirely crossed out, which are in fact absent in the printed version; and conversely, notes and even paragraphs from the printed edition are not found in this manuscript, probably added during the last reading of the proof. It should be noted that words sometimes differ between the two versions. For example, in the manuscript, he wrote "...which adds its twenty-seven periods" replaced in the printed version by "...it adds its four ages", or "...massif of Geinizia, precursor of the Banana Tree of India" by "...precursor of the Mammoth-tree".
