Camille MAUCLAIR, pen name of Camille Laurent Célestin Faust - Lot 35
Camille MAUCLAIR, pen name of Camille Laurent Célestin Faust (1872-1945), French poet, novelist, art historian and literary critic. The Pure Face of Greece. Autograph manuscript signed and dated 1934, of 229 in-4 leaves written in blue ink, bound in a binder with a titled spine. The complete manuscript, dedicated to his wife ("To my dearest Suzanne, in memory of the blessed tears that came to our eyes, the first morning on the Acropolis! Camille Mauclair"), is composed of a dusty and detached title page, a page "by the same author", a dedication page, three chapters (I. La Lumière de l'Attique, 90 ff. - II. THE LIGHT OF THE ATTIC, 90 FF. Four Sanctuaries, 72ff. - III. The Dead Greatness, 66ff.), and ends with a table leaf. It contains erasures, corrections and some passages completely crossed out, and even bears his signature, which he will erase, before the part dedicated to the Holy Delos. In his work, Mauclair lovingly describes the Greek monuments, he helps to feel the atmosphere in which one finds oneself when visiting Greece but also shows his admiration for the Greek people.
