In May 1920, Creswell wrote a proposal for a history of Muslim architecture in Egypt, which he submitted to King Fouad I of Egypt, an enthusiastic patron who recognized the importance of such a work. Creswell received 800 Egyptian pounds for three years to finance the work. The work turned out to be even more monumental than Creswell had anticipated, the archaeological excavations considerably increased the number of known monuments. The present publication brings together this considerable work. Creswell bequeathed his library of more than 3,000 volumes to the American University in Cairo, as well as his collection of about 11,000 photographic prints.
