Edouard VERSCHAFFELT (1874-1955) - Lot 2
Edouard VERSCHAFFELT (1874-1955) The caravan Oil on canvas Signed lower left 96 x 147 cm Bibliography M. VIDAL-BUE, L'Algérie des Peintres 1830-1960, édition Edif 2000, Paris 2003. Verschaffelt having lived most of his life in southern Algeria, his career is sometimes compared to that of Etienne Etienne DINET (1861-1929). However, it was in Morocco, in the early years of the century, that he discovered the oriental world and painted his first orientalist works. Trained at the Fine Arts School in Ghent, the painter discovered Bou-Saâda in 1919. He returned there in 1924 and married a young woman from the Ouled Sidi Brahim tribe. Verschaffelt retired there, finding in his Saharan family both his models and his personal happiness. He only returns to Algiers for the vernissages of his gallery exhibitions or to accompany his consignments to the Salon des artistes algériens et orientalistes.
