[ROBINEAU DE BOUGON - SLAVERY - ANTILLES].... - Lot 333 - Gros & Delettrez
[ROBINEAU DE BOUGON - SLAVERY - ANTILLES]. Handwritten chart entitled "Journal de l'habitation de Monsieur Robineau de Bougon". April 1791. 1 p. oblong folio (30 x 45 cm). Some wetness and brittleness. Large summary table of a sugar farm for the month of April 1791, in the West Indies. It bears these categories: "Daily work, with long list / Rolling / Cooking of materials / Steaming / Pounding / Sale of bitter syrups / General observations / Increases / State of buildings / Deficits", each divided into various categories. "Male Negroes have begun sorting sugars". The "Increase" section has three remarks about animals: "A gazelle born on the 8th from the cow named Gniongnion - a colt [sic] born on the 11th from the mare named Commencée - a filly born on the 15th from the mare named Bichone". The "Deficit" section is divided into two edifying parts: "Negroes" and "Animals", containing respectively these remarks: "Fanchette and Babotte negrites, died on the 8th, of smallpox confluent with a strong whooping cough. Jean François negillon, died on the 10th from the same causes" and "Jaloux (mule) died on the 9th, of glanders. Grand Jean (mule) died on the 21st, of the same disease". The section "General Observations" contains information on the life of the plantation: works, building repairs, steaming of sugar cane and syrups, the damage of whooping cough in children and "The negrites Olive and Jeanne were baptized; the first named Colette and the second Hélène".
