PAVIE, Auguste (1847-1925), French explorer of Asia and diplomat. Set of 21 documents: 5 autograph manuscripts and 16 autograph sheets containing tables for his work on elephants. S.l.n.d. 3 pp. in-16 and 18 pp in-8 on small-square paper. -5 manuscripts, of which 3 (3 pp. in-16) laminated on tabs and then on table sheets "Appreciation of travelers, Comparison with those of India", one manuscript on the fossil elephant (2 pp. in-8 oblong) and one on table "Eleph taurages" (1 p. in-8). Pavie relates memories from Saigon, Cochinchina and Cambodia, relating to elephants especially as a means of transportation. "The elephants of India, used to being housed, fed and well cared for, although they carry heavier loads, are much less likely than ours to suffer accidents and the vicissitudes of a somewhat long campaign. Fossil elephants in Malta: "Captain Pratt in a cruise of the "Medina" discovered no less than three different species of primitive elephants in the ossiphere cave of Zebbug, in the island of Malta. In a lecture given on June 27, 1865 to the Zoological Society of London, Mr. George Busk (1807-1886), a British surgeon, zoologist and paleontologist, related two of these species to the pygmy or dwarf species, and the third to the types now existing in Africa and Asia. How can we explain the presence of such important remains of large herbivorous mammals in such a confined space as the island of Malta? [...] ".
