[LESSEPS - PANAMA CANAL]. Set of 13 documents: -LESSEPS, Hélène Autard de Bragard (1848-1909), wife of Ferdinand de Lesseps. L.A.S. to Mme de Joncières. La Chesnaye, December 26, 1892. 4 pp. in-8. The indictment of Ferdinand de Lesseps in the Panama scandal. "Without the painful and odious events we are going through I would have already thanked you [...]. I am alone. Think of my poor, aged and weakened Mr. de Lesseps whom I am protecting against an awful and revolting ingratitude. He who had given his life to his country which had loved and glorified him! Finally after the ordeal God will send us I hope the reward. My strength comes from my faith! I am overwhelmed with letters, with dispatches, all very touching! [...]. It is a life of slavery that I have been leading for a long time already [...]". The affair of the Panama Canal was the biggest scandal of financial corruption of the 3rd Republic: the bankruptcy reached hundreds of thousands of subscribers because of the collusion between the power and the finance.
