[ROCHAMBEAU - JAMAICA - CORSAIRS]. L.A.S.... - Lot 328 - Gros & Delettrez
[ROCHAMBEAU - JAMAICA - CORSAIRS]. L.A.S. "De La Heuze". Mole, 10 fructidor year XI [28 August 1803]. 3 pp. 1/4 in-folio. Restored fading in a corner without affecting the text. Very interesting letter dedicated to the situation of Jamaica, its catastrophic government by the English, the fear of the English in front of the French privateers and notably Jacques Mathieu, etc. Following a navigational error, La Heuze arrived a few days late in Jamaica and went aboard the Admiral, a vessel commanded by Sir John Thomas Duckworth, commander-in-chief of the country. The latter was absent "having convened an extraordinary Council to adopt measures to guarantee the island from an invasion or a revolutionary movement. After 24 hours in Port-Royal, La Heuze noted the disastrous situation: famine and disease reigned "Wine is unaffordable and flour is rare. For some time now, no Americans have arrived; it is said that there is a misunderstanding between the Spaniards and the English. The latter are very fearful of French privateers. Jacques Mathieu has acquired a great reputation having killed the captain of an English brig and put the ship out of action after three boardings [...]". He evokes the praises made by an English admiral towards Donatien Marie Joseph de Vimeur de ROCHAMBEAU and his "consideration that he had for him during his cruise before the Cape [...]". "The arsenals of the English navy are "deprived of all the utensils necessary for the equipment of the squadron", etc.
