CHARCOT, Jean-Baptiste (1867-1936), French doctor and polar explorer. Set of 3 documents: -an autograph telegram signed "Jean", addressed to his sister and brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Waldeck-Rousseau in Jersey. 16 August 1903. 1 p. in-12 oblong. Postmark. "Sailor killed accident maneuvering out Havre obliged to return Havre embrace. Jean". Charcot had left Le Havre one day earlier, on August 15, on the ship "Le Français" to the South Pole, for the first expedition to Antarctica. During this departure an accident occurred: a sailor fell, bloody, and died without Charcot being able to do anything about it. The morale of the crew was put to the test and Charcot asked his wife to apologize to the widow of the deceased. -L.A.S. November 21, 1927. About articles, interviews, publicity and the introduction he wrote for his book Christophe Colomb vu par un marin (Flammarion, 1928). "The preface will be done by Cdt Chack". Paul Chack (1876-1945), a French naval captain and collaborator, was shot in 1945. He has just returned from his trip to explore the eastern coast of Greenland and found children and cats, etc. -1 C.V.A.S. S.l.n.d. Yellowed corners.
