BOUGAINVILLE, Hyacinthe de (1781-1846), great... - Lot 314 - Gros & Delettrez
BOUGAINVILLE, Hyacinthe de (1781-1846), great sailor and son of the navigator Louis-Antoine de Bougainville. Set of 4 L.A.S. 1837, 1845 and s.d. 7 pp. 1/2 in-8. Interesting letters: he asks for a favor for his "second in command on La Thétis during the voyages around the world"; a letter to Gaspard Gourgaud: "I have been presented by the minister, with some others that I do not know, to the option of the King who must choose among us a c[ontre] -admiral. I am at the head of the list and if I stick to my titles I will be without worry [...]". He evokes "his deeds since 1830", their last gastronomic dinner and says that he wants to retire "if I am not done justice; the name I bear does not allow me to serve any longer as a stepping stone for others. Three days ago, I was told, the work was presented to the King [...]". 1837 : Bougainville thanks Mrs. Delpech, widow of the engraver who made the portrait of his father and affirms "The letter which was given to me by you, is indeed from the hand of my father [...] it is posterior to the first events of the Revolution". The list of the new formation of the navy will make it possible to date it. He adds "I found the portrait of his father very well engraved" and would like two other copies for his brothers, etc.
