VORONOFF, Serge (1866-1951), French surgeon... - Lot 313 - Gros & Delettrez
VORONOFF, Serge (1866-1951), French surgeon of Russian origin, he developed a controversial technique of grafting animal organs and in particular monkey testicle tissues into humans. Important set of 19 L.A.S. and C.A.S., addressed to Fernand Hauser. [Paris], London, Boulogne-sur-Seine, Monte-Carlo, n.d. 37 pp. of various sizes. Various headings including "Collège de France - Chirurgie expérimentale". Interesting scientific correspondence in which Voronoff explains himself about animal organ transplants and gives many details about his recent discoveries. About a conference in Rome, which was "extraordinarily successful": "[...] I pointed out that the internal secretion of glands is the same in man as in animals and that all opotherapy is based on this fact. But for the grafting it is necessary to choose the animals whose tissues can live, to graft them in our body and for that it is necessary to address to big monkeys because in them the blood is identical to that of the man and consequently a gland borrowed from them will find in the human body the same quality of food and will be able to accomplish its function perfectly. A new way is thus opened to human therapeutics [...]"; "[...] The Minister of the Colonies has charged me with studying in the colonies the possible applications of grafting to regenerate the indigenous livestock [...]. In each colony we are thinking of establishing a grafting center [...]. We hope to be able to create stronger, more workable cattle breeds and also sheep breeds with richer, longer fleeces [...]". "The possibility of fixing by heredity after a few generations the qualities acquired by successive transplants, an idea that I put forward a year ago, has been confirmed recently in the work of the Pasteur Institute. He evokes Dr Roux, and the work of Professor Metalnikoff "The latter succeeded in repeating the immunization against cholera of animals for 4 generations to obtain a 5th generation where 75% of the individuals became by heredity absolutely refractory to cholera [...]". He applies his reasoning to sheep, oxen, etc.
