SAINT-SAËNS, Camille (1835-1921). L.A.S.... - Lot 253 - Gros & Delettrez
SAINT-SAËNS, Camille (1835-1921). L.A.S. to Henri Cellier. [Monaco], 21 March 1914. 4 pp. in-8. Header of the Palace of Monaco crowned. Preserved envelope. Amazing letter dedicated to zoology and naturalism and in particular to Saint-Saëns' work: La parenté des plantes et des animaux, in which he defends himself from accusations of fantasy. He does not wish to present himself as a naturalist but he studied Natural History for two years "to the exclusion of any other occupation... Will you allow me to defend myself a little? I have never disputed the usefulness of joints, but that of the system (general in all quadrupeds) of subdivision of bones, which makes the forearm more fragile than the arm, the leg more fragile than the thigh [...]". There follows a debate on the shape of mushrooms and the moon. Saint-Saëns evokes the Danse macabre, an Italian astronomer, Goethe, etc.
