TALLEYRAND, Charles-Maurice de (1754-1838).... - Lot 142 - Gros & Delettrez
TALLEYRAND, Charles-Maurice de (1754-1838). M.A. S.l.n.d. 3 pp. in-4. Minor creasing. Rare manuscript of Talleyrand, containing about 23 maxims of Sébastien de Chamfort. The choice of these quotations is extremely interesting and contains some variants added knowingly or not: "There are things that it is much easier to legalize than to legitimize"; "There are two things to which one has to get used: the insults of time, and the injustices of men"; "The Memoirs that one leaves after oneself, to serve the history of one's life and to serve above all one's vanity recall the story of this saint who had left one hundred thousand écus to serve his canonization", etc. Some are lighter: "in marriage, there is of received only what is sensible and there is of interesting only what is insane"; "To be likeable in the world, it is necessary to let oneself learn what one already knows", etc.
