HAUSSMANN, Georges Eugène, baron (1809-1891).... - Lot 85 - Gros & Delettrez
HAUSSMANN, Georges Eugène, baron (1809-1891). L.A.S. addressed to Mr. Garfounkel. Péra, May 12, 1873. 6 pp. in-8. Very interesting letter about Haussmann's mission in Turkey. Haussmann is in Turkey to establish the Compagnie de Finance et de travaux Publics de l'empire Ottoman and to obtain "the concession of the railroad network of Asiatic Turkey (more than 3000 kilometers) whose construction was the reason for this financial operation". He tells the difficulties of his position "Since the last change of grand Vizier, my situation has improved a lot. The old one personified the thought hostile to the French influence, and favorable to the efforts of the Germans to take hold here. Finally, he had a pet peeve, which made him systematically hostile to my proposals: the execution of public works by the troops [...]". A fascinating account of his progress.
