FRANÇOIS I (1494-1547). L.S. " Francoys "... - Lot 83 - Gros & Delettrez
FRANÇOIS I (1494-1547). L.S. " Francoys " addressed to his general adviser of finances to the duchy of Burgundy, Raoul II Hurault. Saint-Germain en Laye, March 25, 1526 "before Easter". 28 x 58 cm. Cuts in the parchment and missing parts, without affecting the signature of the King. A fascinating document. Francis I summarizes his situation, justifying his great need for money: great expenses made to resist the enemy, he delivered his eldest sons: the dauphin Francis and his younger brother Henry of Orleans, future Henry II, to Charles V, as hostages, to remain free, following the defeat of Pavia, points out the shameful terms of the treaty of Madrid signed with the Emperor, the necessity in which he found himself to enter into a league with "the Pappe" and the lordship of Venice, etc. Francis I ordered and enjoined the collection of half of the salaries of all royal officers from the end of March in the hands of the receivers of the aids and sizes of the generality of Burgundy. Eight days before this letter was written, on March 17, 1526, Francis I had delivered his two eldest sons to Charles V as a pledge of the execution of the treaty of Madrid.
